POSADA, Tuesday, DECEMBER 20, Mass 6 pm; Posada 7 pm

The word Posada means ‘lodging’ or ‘inn’ and is traditionally a religious celebration honoring the birth of baby Jesus. It was created as a re-telling of the story of how Mary and Joseph were looking for a place to stay in the days leading up to the birth of Jesus. For every night that they approached an inn, throughout Latin American culture, a Posada can take place. This is each evening in the lead-up to Christmas Eve, or Noche Buena. 

Though widely celebrated across Latin America, some believe that the Posada originated in Mexico. There is the story that the friars of San Agustin de Colman, close to Mexico City, started the tradition by celebrating the misa de Aguinaldo, the Christmas bonus mass, in the week before Christmas. The tradition soon moved away from the church into family homes and became the celebration of Jesus Christ that are celebrated by many Mexicans today. 

La palabra Posada significa "alojamiento" o "posada" y es tradicionalmente una celebración religiosa en honor al nacimiento del niño Jesús. Fue creado como un recuento de la h istoria de cómo María y José buscaban un lugar para quedarse en los días previos al nacimiento de Jesús. Por cada noche que se acercaron a una posada, en toda la cultura latinoamericana, se puede realizar una Posada. Esto es cada noche antes de la víspera de Navidad, o Noche Buena. 

Aunque ampliamente celebrada en América Latina, algunos creen que la Posada se originó en México. Cuenta la historia que los frailes de San Agustín de Colman, cerca de la Ciudad de México, iniciaron la tradición celebrando la misa de Aguinaldo, en la semana anterior a la Navidad. La tradición pronto se alejó de la iglesia a los hogares familiares y se convirtió en la celebración de Jesucristo que celebran muchos mexicanos hoy.
